1972 Rolex Luminova Red Submariner 1680 MK8
Description
This is a rare example of a Luminova Red Sub 1680. Over time, many of the Red Subs had their dials replaced with white ones – first with white tritium, then with white Luminova dials. Until the mid-1990s, this was not such a big deal, as the Red Subs were not as sought-after then as they are today.
Then, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, discontent grew within the vintage Rolex community that Red Subs were simply being turned into White Subs without the old dials being returned.
Finally, Rolex responded and began producing red Luminova dials as a service replacement. However, since most dials had already been replaced, or the owners refused to replace the dials at all, only a few of them were ever installed. This makes these Luminova Reds quite unique and rare finds.
